Dez Bryant thinks a media conspiracy is keeping him from catching on with a new teal. In reality it’s his contract demands and diminishing skills.
Some athletes should really think twice about using social media to express their feelings. Former Dallas Cowboys wideout Dez Bryant apparently falls into this category. The enigmatic wide receiver took to Twitter to articulate his belief that the media is to blame for his lack of interest on the free agency market.
The truth, of course, is that Bryant blew his best opportunity to find a new team when he elected to decline a contract offer from the Baltimore Ravens just before the draft. Bryant wants a one-year deal to help him rehabilitate his value before hitting free agency in 2019. It’s believed the Ravens wanted him to sign a two-year deal instead.
Now, that Ravens ship seems to have sailed. Their decision to sign Willie Snead should end their interest in Bryant. Now it seems Bryant will have to wait for a team to suffer an injury at the position before he’s going to get another shot in the NFL.
Obviously, the media doesn’t have a collective ax to grind with Bryant. If anything, he’s been a plentiful source of interesting quotes over the years. If anything, the “media” should want to see Bryant catch on with another team because he gives them so much content to cover.
The real reason Bryant hasn’t caught on with a new team is that there are serious questions about how good he is at this point in his career. He really struggles to separate from quality NFL defensive backs due to his declining foot speed. He can still make tough catches in traffic, but he just doesn’t stretch defenses like he used to.
That means he needs to go to a team who needs a big-bodied receiver who can work the middle of the field. In many ways, Bryant plays more like a tight end than a wide receiver. He still has a place in the league, but he needs to check his ego and delusion at the door if he’s going to find it.
